Zen Master Thich Nhat Hahn speaks often about the healing powers of deep, compassionate listening. I’ve always read stories. I’ve always gathered stories. The stories I’ve gravitated towards often involve vulnerability. In “Letters to Sam,” quadriplegic psychologist Daniel Gottlieb writes to his young autistic grandson, “When I am in a dark tunnel, I want to be with people who love me enough to sit in the darkness with me and not stand outside telling me how to get out.”
“Listening is an act of love,” says StoryCorps founder David Isay in his recent book with the same title. I suppose that’s a trait many documentarians share--the desire to listen, heal, reveal, celebrate and love.
